A Little Heat

darkly I gaze into the days ahead where they measure your worth by the measure of your debt everyone lives on the wrong side of town racing each other on a merry-go-round with a roll of dollars as big as your fist you can make any man cease and desist until he can't remember if he even exists what was once a simple joke is overgrown, wild and out of control out of control quickly we sink without a warning bell take away that hammer and its just a shell someone once said someday we'd need but no one remembers how to make it ring and so you pray to anything to clear the way throw ourselves in the river to wash the dirt away shovel shit straight up our veins what was once a simple joke is overgrown, wild and out of control out of control slowly this storm rises up from behind somehow it got us right between the eyes hope is just a flicker in the pitch black night reminding everyone that there used to be light from your hand to your heart your mind to your tongue was it ever this hard to love someone? you know a bell cannot be un-rung what was once a simple joke is overgrown, wild and out of control out of control

I'm not afraid of what we might forget the words exchanged what they really meant we can get through this freeze all it takes is a little heat time goes fast when the going is good things look up our fate is understood we can keep this peace all it takes is a little heat there's no going back we're already home when what happens next is left to chance I'll follow your lead if we're late to the dance we'll set fire to that scene all it takes is a little heat if the sun disappears and shadows grown long our colors may fade, remember this song it'll help us to see all we need is a little heat all we need is a little heat all we need is a little heat

long way home faded and wasted it's the great unknown we don't know the middle is a riddle a punchline to a joke who were you? who were you? we're past the point rockin' and forgotten no one knows your name there's no doubt winners and beginners share the same fate who were you? who were you? play your part from hunger to wonder everything is new wait, don't wait it's near to here I recognize you who were you? who were you? who were you? who were you? where do we go from here? where do we go from here?

Everything is free now, that's what they say Everything I ever done, gonna give it away Someone hit the big score, they figured it out They were gonna do it anyway, even if it doesn't pay I can get a tip jar, gas up the car Try to make a little change down at the bar Or I can get a straight job, I done it before Never minded workin' hard, it's who I'm workin' for Everything is free now, that's what they say Everything I ever done, gotta give it away Someone hit the big score, they figured it out They were gonna do it anyway, even if it doesn't pay Every day I wake up, hummin' a song But I don't need to run around, I just stay at home And sing a little love song, my lover, myself If there's something that you wanna hear, you can sing it yourself 'Cause everything is free now, that's what I said No ones gotta listen to the words in my head Someone hit the big score, I figured it out And I'm gonna do it anyway, even if it doesn't pay

if it seems like our luck is running out of steam take me to the light when there's no one left between you and me take me to the light if every word is too good to be true take me to the light when every move becomes an excuse take me to the light take me to the light let the sun soak to my bones take me to the light if the ringing in my ears won't let me sleep take me to the light when you've abandoned all the love you promised to keep take me to the light if ever there's a time to believe in doubt take me to the light when winter finally comes and my fire's burned out take me to the light take me to the light let the sun wash over my skin take me to the light let's not let them win take me to the light when common sense comes under attack take me to the light if everyone believes in alternative facts take me to the light when overnight, our signals get jammed take me to the light if my city's in ruins and our fates be damned take me to the light take me to the light let the sun bleach out my bones take me to the light somewhere I can let go take me to the light when the final lie passes from his lips take it to the light if there's no one else to fall for his tricks take it to the light when the sky clears up and the storm falls apart take it to the light if we all just listen to the humming in our hearts take it to the light take me to the light let the sun reveal our hurt take me to the light let the sun do its work take me to the light take me to the light take me to the light I'm beginning to see the light take me to the light

about

At the beginning of the pandemic, I understood the abundance of time that I would have on my hands. I also started to feel an anger simmering low in my belly. The first song I wrote for this album was "Money is a Motherfucker." I had/have a hard time relating to the idea that people dying from a disease we know so little about was less important than money.

I posted a Facebook Live video of the song and then got the idea to try and collaborate long distance with some music folk I know. The first person I reached out to was celebrated producer Eric "Roscoe" Ambel up in New York. I had sat in on bass and guitar with a couple of bands he had produced over the years... He liked the song... and in what felt like ten minutes he put drums and guitars over my scratch tracks... the whole thing was done in about a day.

I had no real intention of doing an entire album. In our texting back and forth he said, "That was fun! What else you got?"

In truth I had nothing else... but I replied, "Gimme an hour."

That's how this record happened... from the end of March to the end of April... A Little Heat entered into the world.
